LAD/Blog #1: Mayflower Compact/Fundamental Orders of CT
1.) What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact?
The Mayflower Compact is a document which seems to be freshly created by colonists who have just migrated from Europe. In the document, many concepts which seem to be direct from Europe are included, such as the desire to glorify God through the colony's actions in the pursuit of advancing the Christian faith, bringing honor to the mother countries from which the colonists are from, and forming a political group to bring control to the colonies in supplement to King James' rule.

2.) How does the Mayflower Compact reflect and attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds?
The Mayflower Compact displays an attachment to both the Old and New worlds through multiple ways. The main connection to the Old world that is reflected in the Compact is the constant referencing to the leaders from the Old world, namely king James. The main way that New world ties are established through the Compact, is through the purpose of the Compact, to establish a basic democracy to govern the colonists.
3.) How did the fundamental orders of Connecticut differ from the Mayflower Compact?
The fundamental orders of Connecticut vary from the Compact in the sense that the emphasis on Old World connections is virtually non existent in the fundamental orders, a very sharp contrast to the Compact. In addition the fundamental orders provide a descriptive list of actions to be taken to form the elected body, where as the Compact only stated the desire of colonists to form a government.

4.) What prompted the colonists of Connecticut to take this approach to government, i.e.: use of a written constitution?
They wanted it recorded since they believed it was the will of God for the colonists to create a system which maintains peace. It also allowed the colonists to set a precedent for their successors.
5.) In what significant way(s) does the Fundamental Orders reflect a fear of and safeguard against the usurping of power by one person or a chosen few?
The Fundamental Order show their fear and precautions made to prevent a totalitarian government by their establishment of rules such as limits on terms servable by governors and the requirement for the support of the majority to reach any form of position of power.
