LAD/Blog #7: Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

Image result for george washington foreign policyWashington went out and said that there was a war brewing in Europe between many countries, including Austria, Sardinia, Prussia, Great Britain, and the Netherlands on one side, and then France on the other side. Then he proceeds to state that the US has nothing to do with this, and should keep out of the war. He even goes out and says that any citizens non compliant with this request won't be protected by the US government.



Image result for USA becoming world power cartoonThis picture show the US becoming a world power, and starting to have a larger global influence following the World Wars. Modern America is very different compared to the ideals that are common today, with war mongering and questionable alliances. George Washington would be rolling in his grave if he found about the wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and our troops in Afghanistan, our occupation of west Germany, and Japan following WW2, and our alliances with governments like the ones in Saudi Arabia.

                              1.)    Who was Peter Zenger? Zenger was the printer for the New York Weekly Journal, which had published accusations of tyranny and mistreatment of people's rights about New York Governor Cosby. Because of this Governor Cosby decided to go after Peter Zenger, on the assumption that without a printer, the Journal would not be able to be published. This led to Zenger's arrest. 2.)   What was the controversy over his charges? Zenger's arrest was made controversial when his lawyer, Andrew Hamilton made clear to the jury that his charge, publishing of seditious libel, required for the information published by his newspaper to be false. LAD/Blog #29: Clayton Anti-Trust Act

The Clayton Anti Trust Act was made as a replacement to the ineffective Sherman Anti Trust Act. The Sherman Anti Trust Act was vague and weak. It was abused by pro business governmental leaders, and was even used as an excuse to attack union strikers. The Clayton Anti-Trust Act on the other hand, accomplished a point for each finger. The 5 points included the restriction of price fixing, unfair tying and dealing practices, giving the power to sue corporations to individuals, allowing unions, and stopping anti competitive mergers. The Federal Trade Commission was also formed in 1914 which created a regulatory body, providing accountability to these big companies. Blog #3: Declaration of Independence.

1.  List the democratic principles discussed in the opening. Many democratic principles are discussed during the opening of the declaration of independence. One of these includes the idea that "all men are created equal", and are granted with, "unalienable rights", including rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The declaration also continues in emphasizing that the government is run by the citizens, and not by one person, like in a monarchy. It is also included that citizens have the right to overthrow the government if they feel the government is ignoring the majorities' requests. 2.  List 5 grievances the colonists were making the King aware of.  One of the actions taken by the declaration of independence was the listing of grievances of the American public.
