LAD/Blog #8: Washington's Farewell Address

Washington's Farewell Address was the solemn conclusion of the first presidents 8 years of presidency, a term length only topped by FDR, a president that saved America from financial ruin, and made US the superpower it is today through his role in the creation of the Atomic bomb. In this address he warns Americans from pitfalls he fears the US could succumb to. 3 of them include:

Washington fears that factions could misrepresent passions or opinons of the people, and that he hopes that even though political divides are inevitable, they can be manifested through political parties which can recognize differences and still come together for the best of the country.

2. Foreign Influences. George Washington found these influences to be the enemy of the republican government. He advises that the US expand commercial relation (trade) but cut off political connections with theses foreign nations. By doing this he also effectively warns the US from having foreign alliances also.

3. Morality and Religion. George Washington emphasizes how morality and religion provide a backbone for a functioning society, and as such also necessary for political prosperity.

                              1.)    Who was Peter Zenger? Zenger was the printer for the New York Weekly Journal, which had published accusations of tyranny and mistreatment of people's rights about New York Governor Cosby. Because of this Governor Cosby decided to go after Peter Zenger, on the assumption that without a printer, the Journal would not be able to be published. This led to Zenger's arrest. 2.)   What was the controversy over his charges? Zenger's arrest was made controversial when his lawyer, Andrew Hamilton made clear to the jury that his charge, publishing of seditious libel, required for the information published by his newspaper to be false. LAD/Blog #29: Clayton Anti-Trust Act

The Clayton Anti Trust Act was made as a replacement to the ineffective Sherman Anti Trust Act. The Sherman Anti Trust Act was vague and weak. It was abused by pro business governmental leaders, and was even used as an excuse to attack union strikers. The Clayton Anti-Trust Act on the other hand, accomplished a point for each finger. The 5 points included the restriction of price fixing, unfair tying and dealing practices, giving the power to sue corporations to individuals, allowing unions, and stopping anti competitive mergers. The Federal Trade Commission was also formed in 1914 which created a regulatory body, providing accountability to these big companies. The Anti Trust Division of the US Department of Justice also accomplished this goal. The act was passed during Wilson's Presidency

Blog #3: Declaration of Independence.

1.  List the democratic principles discussed in the opening. Many democratic principles are discussed during the opening of the declaration of independence. One of these includes the idea that "all men are created equal", and are granted with, "unalienable rights", including rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The declaration also continues in emphasizing that the government is run by the citizens, and not by one person, like in a monarchy. It is also included that citizens have the right to overthrow the government if they feel the government is ignoring the majorities' requests. 2.  List 5 grievances the colonists were making the King aware of.  One of the actions taken by the declaration of independence was the listing of grievances of the American public.
