Blog #4: Rethinking the Revolution

Image
1. George Washington went through his writings and fixed any mistakes, and overall edited his style, after the war. 2. The Revolutionary War didn't have as many overall deaths as other wars, such as the civil war. This was thought to be because the elites in Boston wanted the war to be censored, in order to quell the labor movement of the time. 3.There was no recorded imagery of any fights or battles in the war. 4. Most of the British commanders and leaders during the war were largely forgotten, whereas US soldiers like George Washington are often remembered. This causes the war to be remembered more by the American cause, a fight for liberty. 5.The French played a relatively small role in the war.   I felt that the Black Lives Matter movement was very similar to the revolutionary war in that they were both groups of people who felt they were oppressed rising up and reclaiming thier rights.

1.  List the democratic principles discussed in the opening. Many democratic principles are discussed during the opening of the declaration of independence. One of these includes the idea that "all men are created equal", and are granted with, "unalienable rights", including rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The declaration also continues in emphasizing that the government is run by the citizens, and not by one person, like in a monarchy. It is also included that citizens have the right to overthrow the government if they feel the government is ignoring the majorities' requests. 2.  List 5 grievances the colonists were making the King aware of.  One of the actions taken by the declaration of independence was the listing of grievances of the American public. American concerns included the ignoring or salutary neglect policy that the British had to American colonies. Other grievances include how the British didn't establish a j...

LAD/Blog #2: Peter Zenger

1.)    Who was Peter Zenger? Zenger was the printer for the New York Weekly Journal, which had published accusations of tyranny and mistreatment of people's rights about New York Governor Cosby. Because of this Governor Cosby decided to go after Peter Zenger, on the assumption that without a printer, the Journal would not be able to be published. This led to Zenger's arrest. 2.)   What was the controversy over his charges? Zenger's arrest was made controversial when his lawyer, Andrew Hamilton made clear to the jury that his charge, publishing of seditious libel, required for the information published by his newspaper to be false. Since Zenger had only published true information, the Jury acquitted (good wordel) him of his charges. 3.)   What influence did his case have on American governmental traditions? Though his case did not have any imm...

LAD/Blog #1: Mayflower Compact/Fundamental Orders of CT

Image
1.)   What concepts are included in the Mayflower Compact? The Mayflower Compact is a document which seems to be freshly created by colonists who have just migrated from Europe. In the document, many concepts which seem to be direct from Europe are included, such as the desire to glorify God through the colony's actions in the pursuit of advancing the Christian faith, bringing honor to the mother countries from which the colonists are from, and forming a political group to bring control to the colonies in supplement to King James' rule.                                  2.)   How does the Mayflower Compact reflect and attachment to both the "Old" and "New" worlds? The Mayflower Compact displays an attachment to both the Old and New worlds through multiple ways. The main connection to the Old world that is r...
