LAD/Blog #11: Monroe Doctrine

Image
Monroe Doctrine   To begin with Monroe addresses the negotiations and conferrings which took place with Russia and England regarding the colonization of the New World. He declares that since the US has been established, the Americas need not be considered land subject for future colonization by any European powers. Then he goes on to speak about how the US wouldn't be involved in the conflicts of Europe or their colonies, and that only if absolutely necessary (like when the US's rights are infringed) would entering a conflict be considered by the US, and the US would otherwise be neutral. Monroe also goes onto note that any assertion of power to establish a European style government in the Americas would be met with an American response. Monroe ends by saying that the US will treat all other governments equally, and if any European power tries to colonize in the Americas, then the US will side with the preexisting government.   George Washington's Farewell Addres...

Blog #9: Columbus

Image
Christopher Columbus was a notable historical figure which provided two distinct versions of himself and as such is remembered in two different lights. One of which being that he was an evil racist man, or the second version to a lesser extent, one of a brave pioneer that laid the roots for the modern world that we know today, one that includes the western hemisphere. In elementary school, teachers taught us the surface level information about him, and how he discovered the world was flat and that he was the first person to find the New World. As the years passed on and our ability to process and understand more dark concepts matured, more information was supplied which completely changed my outlook on the man whom we gave a national holiday to. This led me to the conclusion that even though Columbus may have committed some heroic acts, the atrocities he committed throughout his adult life far outweigh any aforem...

LAD/Blog #8: Washington's Farewell Address

Image
Washington's Farewell Address was the solemn conclusion of the first presidents 8 years of presidency, a term length only topped by FDR, a president that saved America from financial ruin, and made US the superpower it is today through his role in the creation of the Atomic bomb. In this address he warns Americans from pitfalls he fears the US could succumb to. 3 of them include: 1. Political Factions. Washington fears that factions could misrepresent passions or opinons of the people, and that he hopes that even though political divides are inevitable, they can be manifested through political parties which can recognize differences and still come together for the best of the country. 2. Foreign Influences. George Washington found these influences to be the enemy of the republican government. He advises that the US expand commercial relation (trade) but cut off political connections with theses foreign nations. By doing this he also effectively warns the US from having fo...

LAD/Blog #7: Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

Image
Washington went out and said that there was a war brewing in Europe between many countries, including Austria, Sardinia, Prussia, Great Britain, and the Netherlands on one side, and then France on the other side. Then he proceeds to state that the US has nothing to do with this, and should keep out of the war. He even goes out and says that any citizens non compliant with this request won't be protected by the US government. This picture show the US becoming a world power, and starting to have a larger global influence following the World Wars. Modern America is very different compared to the ideals that are common today, with war mongering and questionable alliances. George Washington would be rolling in his grave if he found about the wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and our troops in Afghanistan, our occupation of west Germany, and Japan following WW2, and our alliances with governments like the ones in Saudi Arabia.

LAD/Blog #6: Federalist Paper #10

  1.  What is a faction? A group of citizens united and motivated by thier own economic or political interests and opinions. 2.  Are factions good or bad?  They promote the ideas that the Public may agree with, but also divide up the general population. They may also threaten the government and cause political instability. They can also cause changes that are not for the grater good. 3.  Why are factions so difficult to eliminate? Everyone has opinions which stem from their perspectives and their socioeconomic backgrounds. This ties in with the desire of the general population to surround themselves with like minded peers lead to pseudo factions, which turn into factions. If we tried stopping their root causes, it is close to impossible without destroying liberties.  You can try to control them but eliminating them is impossible due to human nature. 4.  If factions cannot be removed then how can they be controlled? You can control their effe...

Blog #5: Republican Motherhood

Image
What role did the Revolutionary War play in the transformation of housewifery to Republican Motherhood? Women were taught through the revolutionary war a sense of duty and self sacrifice in the name of this great nation. As this happened the image of a women changed from housewife to the person that instilled American values into children, and gave them a newfound respect in the community as they were seen as Patriots. Women were also made literate in order to educate their children (Doc C). 1.       What were the consequences of Republican Motherhood on women?       Republican Motherhood also ingrained in the mind that women should stay in the household to provide the most service to the country.
